Project Management Book of Knowledge - PMBOK

Project Management Book of Knowledge - PMBOK defines 9 areas of best practices for project management namely :

1. Scope
2.Time
3. Cost
4. Quality
5.Human Resources
6. Communications
7.Risk
8. Procurement

9. All fully integrated

WHAT IS A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT

  • Well-defined Scope
  • Have a good sponsor for the project - This is usually upper management staff that has the power to give budget etc.
  • Have the budget
  • Determine to succeed or Will to succeed
  • Approval

Although technical skills, special equiptment & detailed team knowledge is important it is not as critical as the bulleted points as highlighted above. As without technical skills we can grow, train or even buy.

WHAT IS PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Management

What is a Project?

Assignment that has a deadline - 1yr , 2 yrs etc.

With a Well Defined Purpose - E.G. To achieve compliance to IT AUDIT

It should have a start & end date

It should also have Human power & materials' resources to accomplish the project

In real life, the purpose might change and as a result it will affect the timeline

It is good to define several purposes and give them datelines for Phase I , II , III , IV implementation
